Presenters: Marta Kilrain, MS, OTR/L and Ruth Ashley, COTA/L

Presenter Bios: 

Marta earned her BS and MS at the University of New Hampshire. She has worked with children in the school setting for 13 years with a focus on gaining functional skills for increased independence and meaningful participation throughout the school day. She currently provides direct services at Maple Wood Elementary in Somersworth. For the past 7 years, she has served as the OT/ PT Program Director at Strafford Learning Center where she has been a member of the leadership and technology committees. Marta is currently a co-facilitator working to bring Every Moment Counts, an OT lead initiative focused on promoting positive mental health, to the state of New Hampshire. When not at work her interests include cooking, reading and chasing her three small children.

Ruth Ashley graduated as a member of Phi Theta Kappa from the occupational therapist assistant program at NHTI- Claremont in 1994. She has worked as a certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Licensed (COTA/L) for 24 years and has been with Strafford Learning Center for 17. Ruth enjoys her work with students ages 5 to 21 in school programs and thrives on the variety and challenges of that caseload! She is a Tai Chi for health instructor and has taught many workshops and presentations on mindfulness and movement arts. She is participating in the Every Moment Counts initiative of NH OTs and loves to incorporate mental wellness such as relaxation and calming strategies into student sessions. Coloring "therapy" and doodling arts are favorites of hers as well as paper arts such as card-making and scrap-booking.

Goals/objectives:

1) Participants will review the current state expectations for IEP goal writing and be able to state 3 of the requirements.

2) Participants will share at least one current “favorite” goal on a flash drive to contribute to a goal bank.

3) Participants will collaborate in a work session and create at least 2 new goals according to standards.
